Purpose is the core reason a team exists. It’s not simply a motivational statement, it’s the foundation for all strategies, activities, and relationships within the team. When the team’s purpose is clear, it enhances performance, strengthens engagement, and builds resilience during challenging times.
Two elements that form part of a team's purpose are its Vision and the Challenges and Deliverables it's facing.
Creating a Compelling Vision
Vision is the team's collective "big picture". It’s the ultimate goal or state the team seeks to achieve in the future. The vision should be vivid, inspiring, and inclusive. If possible, all members should contribute to its formation.
A strong vision gives context to daily work and long-term ambitions. It ties the team's activities to a larger sense of achievement, providing the "why" behind the "what" and "how." When created inclusively with all team members, the vision not only motivates, but also aligns individual interests with the team objectives.
Focusing the Team on the Challenges and Deliverables
Defining the challenges a team is facing involves identifying the key problems has to solve or opportunities it has to seize.
Identifying the main deliverables defines the tangible outputs and outcomes required from the team's work.
Capturing the challenges and deliverables ensures every member knows why the team exists and what success looks like. This collective understanding provides motivation, especially when things get tough, by reminding everyone of the important "what" that must be accomplished and helps to keep the team focused on priorities and build ownership.
Linking Vision, Challenges and Deliverables
Strong teams link their vision to their challenges and deliverables. The vision points the way forward. Challenges and deliverables define the necessary milestones along that path. Teams should regularly review these connections, and make sure their daily actions reflect the overall purpose and that they adapt as circumstances change. Having this framework gives individuals confidence and pride in their work, linking personal growth with team performance.
An exceptional team's journey starts by clarifying and communicating purpose, then breaking it down into an inspiring vision and concrete challenges and deliverables. Making these elements practical and engaging builds unity, unlocks potential and sustains momentum, even when times get tough. Teams that invest in these foundations consistently outperform those that don’t, whilst experiencing higher engagement, retention, performance and results.
